TÜV SÜD’s Chloe Fletcher, Senior Consultant in Environment & Radioactive Waste Management, has been appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Nuclear Industry Association's (NIA) Advanced Nuclear Technology (ANT) Working Group.
Chloe was voted in as Deputy Chair of the NIA’s new working group by various companies involved in delivering ANTs. Tristram Denton, MoltexFLEX’s Commercial Development Director, will be the new chair.
In this key role for the ANT Working Group, Chloe will be supporting cross-sector collaboration for advanced nuclear technologies with the aim of creating a united voice among developers of ANTs, including small and advanced modular reactors. By speaking collectively to the government and other stakeholders, the group can advocate for the industry's needs and ensure its growth and success. Chloe explained:
“This is a pivotal time for the UK’s nuclear industry, and the formation of this working group will create a united voice to help make purposeful progress towards a more sustainable future. I am excited to be working with Tris and the NIA as I believe that my understanding of the challenges associated with the development of the different reactor technologies, and my impartiality as a senior consultant at TÜV SÜD will provide useful support to the advancement of the working group.”
Tristram added:
“Deployed in the right way, ANTs – alongside GW-scale nuclear reactors – have the potential to offer lower capital costs, lower barriers to entry, and deeper decarbonisation, thereby accessing swathes of the energy sector that nuclear power has not previously supported. This approach will ensure that nuclear plays the largest possible role in fighting climate change, while the UK secures the greatest economic opportunities.”
With surging interest in ANTs and SMRs, the creation of the ANT Working Group couldn’t come at a better time. The purpose and constitution of the group were finalised at the NIA’s ANT conference in June – the first of its kind in the UK – at which Chloe presented “ANT: State of the Nation”.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The UK has a real opportunity to be a world leader in advanced nuclear technologies, with the promise of jobs, clean energy and energy security, so it’s encouraging to see the formation of this working group.
I extend my congratulations to Tris Denton and Chloe Fletcher on their election as Chair and Deputy Chair of the group. With their considerable experience in the advanced nuclear sector, I am confident that they will drive vital progress and position Britain as the best place to invest in these technologies.”
Chloe obtained a First Class Master of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews which included a 12-month external placement in 2019-2020 with Lucite International (now Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation) on palladium catalysis for the production of acrylics. She has two years’ experience in the nuclear industry on the development of molten salt technology. In January 2023, she joined TÜV SÜD as a Senior Consultant working in the Environment and Radioactive Waste Management group. As an ambassador for the Women in Nuclear Network, Chloe is also committed to improving diversity and gender balance within the UK nuclear industry.
The appointment highlights Chloe’s expertise and dedication to driving cross-sector collaboration. With her valuable experience and impartiality, she’s poised to make a significant impact on the development and deployment of advanced nuclear technologies.
