Support for Energy Transition Gets Green Light

As the UK’s Designated Institute for Flow Measurement, TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory is funded by HM Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to deliver the Flow Programme, a suite of projects aiming to ensure the ongoing maintenance and traceability of the existing UK National Flow Measurement Standard facilities, the development of new facilities to meet industry needs, and research and knowledge transfer to support innovation. In December, the Flow Programme Expert Group (the group of experts appointed by BEIS to oversee the work carried out as part of the Flow Programme, PEG) joined the team in East Kilbride for an annual review meeting where they discussed a range of projects being undertaken in areas such as digital metrology, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage and the lab’s plans for the future. At the meeting, the PEG endorsed the ongoing prioritisation of net zero projects whilst providing continued support to the oil and gas sector through the energy transition.

Director of Green Energy & Sustainability and the Flow Programme at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory, Dr Martin Hanton commented: “We were delighted to welcome the Flow Programme PEG to East Kilbride in December and take the opportunity to discuss the successes of 2022, such as our progress in building new hydrogen flow standards for the UK, and our plans for 2023. We discussed the urgent need for traceable flow measurement standards for CCUS to underpin future carbon trading and payments to emitters, and our ongoing work to design and build these facilities for gaseous, liquid and cryogenic CO₂ flow measurement. The PEG fully supported the need for these standards to be built as soon as possible and endorsed the lab’s prioritisation of these facilities to meet upcoming industry needs.”
