First customer-led job in TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory’s new Advanced Multiphase Facility (AMF)

Pietro FiorentiniTÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory’s new Advanced Multiphase Facility (AMF) is now fully operational, having just completed one of the most challenging 14-inch multiphase flow meter tests, which was the first customer-led project.

The facility, which was officially opened recently, was host to Pietro Fiorentini, an Italian-based flow meter manufacturer. Pietro Fiorentini had a requirement to test two 14- inch Multiphase Flow Meter (MPFM), Totem HS (0÷100% GVF range) at a third-party laboratory. Their client had specified that a series of flow measurement tests had to be carried out to ensure that the flow meters would perform according to the design specification.

The flow meters are destined for a floating production unit in the Merakes field in the deep waters of the Kutei Basin, Indonesia, one of the country’s main producing basins.

Pietro Fiorentini required a test programme to be carried out on their Totem HS MPFM. The test programme, comprising a number of flow loop tests in the Advanced Multiphase Facility, was to enable them to demonstrate, in turn, to their end-user client that the meters can be deployed within their specification” said Dr Bruno Pinguet, International Technical Manager at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory.

Pietro Fiorentini chose the Advanced Multiphase Facility for these tests because it was one of the very few facilities in the world which could technically replicate the flowrates specified in the test procedure provided by their client.

The test work went well, and the feedback we have received from our customer so far has been very positive. The testing matrix was very close to the final field conditions hence we are confident that these meters will perform as per specification once installed”, said Pietro Fiorentini.

The AMF doubles previous test facility capabilities to meet industry’s current and future measurement challenges. With a working envelope at least 20 times larger than any multiphase or wet gas facility in the world, the AMF also has the highest flow rate in the world (for both gas and liquid) within one multiphase facility.
