What is the European Train Control System?

The signalling and controlling element of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is called the European Train Control System (ETCS). It is intended to replace the numerous incompatible safety systems now employed by European railways and is a replacement for legacy train protection systems.

By using an interoperable technology, the European Train Control System aims to provide open access to all train networks across Europe.

The European Train Control System is available for use globally and was also adopted outside of Europe. Technically, it falls under the category of positive train control (PTC). In its most modern form, all trackside data is wirelessly transmitted to the driver in the cab, so it is no longer necessary for the driver to monitor the trackside signals. To safely supervise train circulation, the trackside equipment communicates with the vehicle. All of this will lay the groundwork for an automated train operation in the future.

Why is it important to ensure the correct implementation of ETCS?

The EU directive on the interoperability of the trans-European rail system serves as the foundation for equipping lines and rolling stock. In addition to multiple rail lines, train vehicles must also be fitted with or updated to accommodate so-called on-board units (OBUs) for an area rollout of the European Train Control System. This retrofitting projects and handling its complexity can be challenging for rail transportation companies, vehicle owners, and the supply industry.

Good monitoring is important and enables timely identification of deviations to imitate relevant countermeasures early in the project. This helps to ensure the content of the project, to improve the quality and usability of the solution, and to avoid time and cost overruns.

TÜV SÜD’s services for the European Train Control Systems

TÜV SÜD assists in the management of these challenging retrofit projects.

The paperwork generated for the TÜV SÜD train control system evaluation forms another crucial cornerstone for the vehicle's successful clearance. We are on the mission to prepare efficient rail vehicle registration.

We carry out appropriate assessments based on the national and European requirements of components and vehicles (subsystem level), thereby acting as:

  • Notified Body (NoBo)
  • Designated Body (DeBo)
  • Assessment Body (AsBo)

TÜV SÜD can provide support for other project tasks like risk analysis, safety management, design reviews and installation supervision. on various project levels and during various project phases. All our services are tailored to your individual needs and projects.

Why should you choose TÜV SÜD as your partner for ETCS on-board projects?

Our experts have extensive know-how, and a wealth of experience gained from various projects on the topic of the European Train Control System.

In ETCS on-board, we are familiar with the phases and project structure of upgrade and retrofit projects. We can assist you with activities that have proven critical to success of various ETCS vehicle equipment projects and help you to keep them in focus.
