CONFORMITY OF PACKAGING MATERIALS & BIODEGRADABILITY - TESTING

Increasing plastic pollution has led to restrictions on the production of plastics worldwide. This places a particular responsibility on packaging manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with the environmental requirements in force and thus demonstrate that the use of packaging materials does not pose a risk to the environment. Nowadays, more and more attention is being paid to biodegradable or compostable plastics as packaging material in order to preserve the sustainable development of the ecological environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS FOR PACKAGING MATERIALS

Countries have introduced different regulations for packaging materials, both at national and international level, which also address biodegradability. Directive 94/62/EC defines the concept of packaging.

91/2006. (XII.26.) GKM (Ministry of Economy and Transport) Decree on the detailed rules for certifying the conformity of packaging with environmental requirements. All packaging manufacturers are required to demonstrate the environmental compliance of their products, as specified in the Regulation and harmonised standards.

In addition, the legislation also covers the biodegradability of packaging materials. The standard EN 13432 sets requirements for the physical and chemical composition of packaging material, its degree of degradation and biodegradability, and its ecotoxicological risk.
