From 27 September 2026, the EmpCo Directive (EU 2024/825) makes a series of common marketing practices unlawful across the EU. Generic environmental claims — "eco-friendly," "green," "climate-neutral," "carbon-neutral" — can no longer be used without recognised substantiation. Unverified sustainability labels are banned outright. Forward-looking commitments such as "net-zero by 2040" require a detailed and credible implementation plan on file.

For companies placing products on the EU market, this means every public sustainability claim, label, packaging line and product page needs supporting evidence — or it has to be pulled. Member States transposed the Directive into national law by 27 March 2026, and enforcement sits with national consumer authorities under the UCPD framework, with penalties to match.
The impact is sharpest in consumer electronics, cosmetics, food & beverage, textiles and e-commerce — sectors where sustainability messaging carries direct commercial weight.
