Chile’s Ministry of Health has approved a new standard that provides guidelines on claims related to the health-related properties of food and food products.
The new Technical Standard No. 191 on Nutritional Guidelines for Declaring Healthy Food Properties details rules for food health claims, including the specific conditions under which such claims can be used. Notably, the new standard prohibits claims for food and food product intended for children and infants under the age of four, as well as with certain health food supplements such as powders, liquids, tablets and capsules.
The new standard was published in July and repeals Resolution No. 764 of 2009 and Resolution No. 24 of 2011. It enters into force in January 2018.
The text of the Ministry of Health’s Resolution is available (in Spanish) at the National Congress Library of Chile website.
