EU: A new ROHS exemption for Mercury in melt pressure transducers for Capillary Rheometers is added to ANNEX IV

JULY 2023 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS

On 11 July 2023, the European Commission published a RoHS amendment1 to include a new exemption under Annex IV. An EU RoHS exemption application for mercury in melt pressure transducers for capillary rheometers at temperatures over 300 °C and pressures over 1000 bar has been granted with a validity period. The Commission concluded it is currently scientifically and technically impracticable to eliminate or substitute this use of mercury in monitoring and control instruments that fall under category 9 of RoHS Annex I.

The Directive will come into effect from 31 July 2023. The detail is listed in Table A below.

Table A. Newly added entry 49 in Annex IV

Exemption no. Exemption application Category and expiry date
49 Mercury in melt pressure transducers for capillary rheometers at temperatures over 300°C and pressures over 1000 bar
Applies to category 9 and expires on 31 December 2025
