Why did you choose to join TÜV SÜD?

Having worked at a large manufacturing company, I realised that testing and certification are crucial to the overall success of any product. This is where I was first introduced to TÜV SÜD’s services and was very impressed by the professionalism of TÜV SÜD staff. Many companies are struggling to meet the ever-growing demands of their clients, especially for Hydrogen-based projects, and this is where my role will enable safe and reliable testing for the ongoing projects of these companies without disrupting production.

Where do you work?

I primarily work from home but I visit our East Kilbride site from time to time.

What are your main areas of expertise?

I have a doctorate in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering where the focus of my research was developing a variety of fuel cells working on industrial waste. My post-doctoral work has centred around developing multi-scaled (kW-GW) electrolysers, mainly solid oxide (SOEC) and polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks for academia and industry. The hydrogen produced via these electrolysers has been utilised to decarbonise hard to abate sectors e.g., aviation, ammonia and steel.

What does your role involve?

As Head of Hydrogen Industry Services (H2IS) my role is to lead and represent UK for all corporate hydrogen initiatives and wider TÜV SÜD engagement internationally. Together with my team of experts we offer services such as, hydrogen refuelling systems testing, pressure equipment testing and inspection, process safety, fuel cell/electrolyser certification. We are also developing services for hydrogen storage (short & long term) and distribution (pipelines, tube trailers) via collaboration with TÜV SÜD teams in UK and worldwide. 

What most interests you about your role?

The fact that you get to work with people from all backgrounds and expertise means that I get to learn new ways of problem solving. This and the overall impact our services are providing to reach the net zero targets, gives a greater purpose to our efforts and motivates me to keep going every day. The new hydrogen lab being built at East Kilbride office via the ScotGov funding is an exciting expansion for general testing related to H2IS and an encouraging sign for potential growth in this sector. 

What exciting developments have you seen at TÜV SÜD since you started?

In the short time I have been here, I have already seen our service offering range expanding with increased queries from customers. It is also a testament to the recognition and acceptance to embrace growth in the Green Energy and Sustainability (GES) department of TÜV SÜD .

What future trends do you see developing in your area of work?

As the deployment of green hydrogen-based projects takes centre stage, renewable energy technologies (e.g., wind, solar, nuclear, etc.) will be increasingly located next to or in very close proximity to the electrolysers to offset the H2 production and electricity distribution costs. I see a lot more standards and services being developed by our team that will synergistically combine the two to improve governance of green hydrogen projects in the region.

What is your biggest challenge?

Developing new services is bound to have quite a few hurdles and perhaps ruffle a few feathers along the way. It’s important to stay true to the purpose and learn from each experience. As long as we keep on embracing growth, we shall be able to work collaboratively across the whole business to adapt and improvise according to the changing market.

What do you see as the top perk of working for TÜV SÜD?

As mentioned before, TÜV SÜD being such a diverse company offers you the opportunity to exchange new ideas with people from many professions. There is flexibility in working locations and being widely spread across the UK, if I want to be part of an office environment, I can go to any company location near me.

How have TÜV SÜD supported you?

Ever since I joined TÜV SÜD all the colleagues, have been extremely supportive and professional. Whenever I have asked for some guidance, it has been provided to me with a smile. The trainings are well formed and travelling to various sites for business is organised very professionally by our admin and management teams at GES.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying for a role similar to yours?

My advice for any role would be to be passionate towards your work and take pride in the impact your work, however small, will have on your overall purpose in this lifetime. Be open to listen and learn from everyone. Finally, your degrees and knowledge will take you far, yet it’s how you behave with others on a personal and professional level that will take your further.
