Tell us about yourself

Seeking new challenges and greater freedoms, I left school at 17 years of age to pursue a degree from the University of Glasgow. Four years later in 2001 I graduated with a BSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and went on to complete a PgD in Advance Computer Systems Development.

Continuing the theme of challenges and freedoms, I then started a software development company in central-west Glasgow that I continued to develop and grow for ten years before joining TÜV SÜD.

Why did you choose to apply to TÜV SÜD?

I came to the office in East Kilbride at the start of 2013 to discuss the design and development of a software solution for TÜV SÜD, to support offshore operators of oil and gas flow-metering assets. A long story short, I came to work for the company. The big toys really appealed to my inner-child, and I was looking forward to getting back to my engineering roots.

Where do you work?

I am based at our offices in Scottish Enterprise Technology Park, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire.

What are your main areas of expertise?

I sat as the technical lead for our data acquisition and traceability management software from its conception until relatively recently, so I would have to say flow measurement and flow facility operations.

What does your role involve?

Typical days involve coordinating test facility operations, project managers, technical leads, test engineers and technicians to ensure smooth completion of test work whilst ensuring continuous skills development of staff.

What most interests you about your role?

I enjoy new challenges, and the role provides plenty of variety across multiple test facilities which keeps the role interesting.

What exciting developments have you seen at TÜV SÜD since you started?

We recently launched our Advanced Multiphase Facility which combines oil, saline and gas at high pressures and flowrates, and this attracts large and expensive metering technologies for testing.

What future trends do you see developing in your area of work?

We are always striving to improve efficiency and I see automation providing a greater presence in infrastructure design and development.

What do you see as the top perk of working for TÜV SÜD?

The diverse range of projects and challenges make working here interesting, and with each project you’re always working alongside people with their own specialisms and experience that you’re always learning from.
