Time to tackle the transition to EN 16510

TÜV SÜD will present an extensive portfolio of tests and certificates for heating appliances at World of Fireplaces, the international trade show for fireplaces and cosy ambience of living. The testing, inspection and certification (TIC) company’s presence at the trade show will focus on the new EN 16510 product standard series and its own TÜV SÜD certification programme for low-emission wood-burning stoves and fireplaces. World of Fireplaces will be held in Leipzig from 17-19 April 2023. (Hall 5, Stand C 70)

The EN 16510 product standard series replaces five older standards for residential solid fuel appliances and systems – EN 13240 for room heaters, EN 13229 for inset appliances, EN 12815 for cookers, EN 12809 for boilers and EN 14785 for residential space heating appliances fired by wood pellets. The introduction of the new standard series implements major requirements from the European Ecodesign Regulations 2015/1185 and EU 2015/1186, among other provisions. A new standardised method for measuring particulate matter emission (EN-PME) was developed to replace three different methods previously in use. In addition, the new standard series also sets out procedures for determining parameters in energy efficiency labelling and has extended the standard scope to include room-sealed appliances.

“EN 16510 has some important differences from its predecessors”, explains Dirk Weisgerber from the Centre of Competence for Combustion and Heating Systems at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. Given this, the TÜV SÜD expert believes that existing data from previous test reports must be examined to check whether they comply with the new regulations; if this is not the case, re-testing may be necessary. In some cases, the introduction of the new EN 16510 standard series may even result in the need for new type testing. The maximum transition period is three years from the effective date of the new standard, although a shorter period may be defined. Dirk Weisgerber advises manufacturers to take prompt action to transition to the new standard, as re-testing or type testing are time-consuming procedures.

Efficient low-emission fireplace and heater operation

TÜV SÜD has worked with HKI-Verband, the German industrial association of home, heating and kitchen technology, to develop a certification programme for low-emission and efficient operation of wood-burning stoves and log burners. The emission performance and technical features addressed in the programme extend beyond the requirements set out in current standards in order to minimise the influence of user behaviour on stove operation. “Stove users’ behaviour has a major impact on emissions”, warns Dirk Weisgerber. “However, this impact can be reduced by the installation of appropriate technical systems that make eco-friendly stove operation simpler for users.” An example of such a system is a combustion air control/regulation unit with or without downstream dust separator.
