Mexico: Standard NOM-212-SCFI-2017 primary lithium batteries and accumulators, testing and labelling requirements

It exempts those batteries which are integrated in the electrical/electronic equipment and cannot be sold separately.

• Standard NOM-212-SCFI-2017 sets out the following requirements for lithium batteries including:
• classification of battery types
• maximum allowable quantities of mercury and cadmium in the composition of batteries -   Viz. 0.0005% by weight for Mercury and 0.0020% by weight for Cadmium
• labelling on packaging and /or on batteries
• test methods and sampling requirement
• procedure for conformity assessment judge
• certification procedure

This standard is applicable to all batteries imported and sold in Mexico.

It exempts those batteries which are integrated in the electrical/electronic equipment and cannot be sold separately.

NOM-212-SCFI-2017 does not harmonize to any international standard.

The standard takes effect from 28 September 2019.
