EU REACH Candidate List expands to 191 SVHCs

On 27 June 2018, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published the 19th update of the REACH Candidate List1. Ten new Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) were added. Hence, the total number of SVHCs on the Candidate List increases from 181 to 1912.

Besides the eight substances which underwent public consultation during March and April, two further substances, benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid 1,2 anhydride (trimellitic anhydride) (TMA) and dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) were also included into SVHC Candidate List. In April, TMA3 and DCHP4 were identified as SVHCs by the European Commission (EC) due to their respiratory sensitising properties and toxic for reproduction and endocrine-disrupting properties respectively.

Table A lists the SVHCs newly included in the 19th update of Candidate List.

  • Normally not manufactured intentionally but may occur as a constituent or impurities in other substances;
  • This is a PAH and it can be found as impurities in plastic, pigment, paint and adhesive.

  • Used as additive in plastic applications;
  • Used in formulation of coatings/inks, adhesives and sealants.
