REACH REGULATION

Ensure safe use of chemicals through REACH regulation

Ensure safe use of chemicals through REACH regulation

What is REACH?

Chemical substances can pose a threat to health, safety and the environment when they are not handled properly. REACH is an European Union regulation covering most consumer products, requiring companies to report on chemicals used throughout the supply chain and in their products. REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals.

REACH is broad in scope and affects the whole supply chain including companies based outside the EU. Compliance with REACH requires strategic planning as it asks industry to account for compliance throughout the supply chain. Comprehensive testing is a way to demonstrate compliance.

TÜV SÜD provides testing services to companies in obtaining the Chemical Safety Assessment, the Chemical safety Report, the Safety Data Sheet and the Technical Dossier to meet the requirements of the REACH regulation.

Why is REACH compliance important?

The use of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) for specific purposes needs to be authorised regardless of the quantities supplied. SVHCs include substances classified as:

  • CMRs (Carcinogens, Mutagens and substances toxic to the Reproductive system)
  • PBTs (Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic)
  • vPvBs (very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative)
  • Substances, identified from scientific evidence as causing probable serious effects to human health or environment and equivalent to PBTs or vPvBs.
