Upholstered furniture such as sofas and armchairs are tested.
Basis of certification:
The test procedure developed by TÜV SÜD is based on the standards DIN EN 1021-1 (furniture: evaluation of the flammability of upholstered furniture - Part 1: smoldering cigarette as ignition source) and DIN EN 1021-2 (furniture - evaluation of the flammability of upholstered furniture - Part 2: A gas flame comparable to a match as an ignition source). The standards examine the reaction of a substance to a lit cigarette and a butane flame.
The European standard DIN EN 1021-1 specifies, among other things, a test method for determining the flammability of material combinations such as covers and fillings for upholstered seating furniture. A glowing cigarette serves as the ignition source.
The European standard DIN EN 1021-2 specifies, among other things, a test method for determining the flammability of material combinations such as covers and fillings for upholstered seating furniture. The source of ignition is a "small flame" comparable to a burning match.
Products certified by TÜV SÜD Product Service were tested according normative Tests with a positive result. That means, that dangerous smouldering or burning of the tested products is not possible in terms of these standards.
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.
As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.
In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
