The certification mark applies to electrical and electronic equipment that falls under the scope of the RoHS Directive. The Directive applies to various equipment, including: large and small household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, lamps, electrical and electronic tools, toys, sports and leisure equipment, automatic dispensers, electrical light bulbs and lamps in households.
The certification mark is based on the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and the Council of 8 June 2011. RoHS is short for “Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances”. The Directive thus defines restrictions for use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The RoHS Directive requires CE marking for certain products.
TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that hazardous substances in the tested products do not exceed the threshold values defined in the RoHS Directive. In this context, hazardous substances are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) respectively.
The threshold value is 0.1 per cent for each of these substances, except for cadmium. The threshold value for cadmium is 0.01 percent.
