Thanks to the inherent design freedom and ease of fabrication it possesses, Additive Manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D Printing, has the potential to disrupt conventional production. AM is widely regarded as one of the most suitable methods for producing low-volume, high-value, complex-geometry functional parts. AM is enjoying tremendous growth globally and with the growth a new set of safety issues specific to AM has surfaced. Given that the technology utilizes some of the potentially hazardous hardware, materials and processes, safe facilities are on top of the agenda for users and OEMs alike.
With the rapid technological developments in the field, there is an ever-growing gap in understanding AM safety fully. A comprehensive approach to AM safety is highly essential. The lack of knowledge on various types of hazards and their causes makes the mitigation measures less effective. Unlike their counterparts in traditional manufacturing, AM facilities present unique demands for environment, health and safety considerations such as the use of combustible and harmful AM powders, lasers and high voltages as well as chemical and physical hazards. Powders, complex new processes and the need for integration with existing technologies often lead to hazards.
Avoiding fires & explosions, harm to humans and damage to the environment should be viewed as mandatory requirements for AM facilities. Technological advantages of 3D Printing should lead to safe and sustainable products. In many countries across the globe, the relevant stakeholders and regulators must have clear guidelines and well established approaches to guide the setting-up and operation of these facilities. Safe Facility culture should be established across the country by AM drivers and trade associations.
To help you understand the key concepts, TÜV SÜD’s expert will speak in details about concerns of Health & Safety Managers and Operation Managers responsible for setting-up and managing of AM Facilities. Webinar details are as below:
Date: 2 October 2020
