Periodic EV Charger Safety Inspection Regime

Periodic EV Charger Safety Inspection Regime

Electric vehicle charging stations are repeatedly used by many drivers and installed in areas where they might be exposed to climatic influences. Being exposed to such climatic factors, these charging stations have a high chance of getting damaged. Over time, the components in the charging stations may reach the end of their lifecycle and connections may loosen or corrode.

The wear and tear of your charging stations will increase the risks of electrical hazards, which might result in fire or electric shock. Periodic inspection after installation is recommended to ensure that your charging stations are in good condition and safe for usage.

Why are electric vehicle charger inspections required?

Governing bodies in different countries have different requirements to ensure proper installation and maintenance of the charging stations for Electric Vehicles. In Singapore, a nationwide electric vehicle (EV) charging standard, Technical Reference 25 (TR 25), was established in 2010 to provide technical safety requirements for EV charging systems (EVCS). The latest version of the technical reference is TR 25:2022. Under the proper Installation of EV Chargers, companies must engage a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) and an equipment specialist to install, test, and certify the fitness of the EV Charging System (EVCS) installation before it is put into service.

The owner is responsible for the safe use and operation of the EVCS. Regular maintenance, electrical safety inspection and testing should be carried out on the EVCS according to TR 25:2022 to ensure safety. A record of the inspections must be kept and produced to Land Transport Authority (LTA) when required.

You may refer to the table below on the on-site inspection required.
