MARCH 2020 – RELEVANT FOR: TOYS PRODUCTS
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has recently published ISO 8124-3:2020 for the migration of certain elements in toys. This new standard supersedes 2010 version and the previous amendments.
ISO 8124-3 specifies maximum acceptable levels and methods of sampling, extraction and determination for the migration of the elements including antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium from toys. The standard divides toy materials into three categories with different limits. These material categories are modelling clay, finger paint, other materials except modelling clay and finger paint.
The revisions to new standard mainly introduced two detailed dewaxing methods replacing the original one. If toy materials contain any grease, oil, wax or similar material, these ingredients shall be dewaxed before treatment of the test portion. An ICP-OES method for identification and quantification analysis of the elements is also given in Annex C of the standard.
