Food safety management system certification
Food safety management system certification
To ensure the safety of food products, and to reduce the risks of consumer exposure to contaminated or unsafe foods, food producers have introduced internal quality control programmes. These programmes also oblige their suppliers to demonstrate compliance with industry-standard food safety requirements, protocols and testing procedures. Every business within the supply chain should therefore establish an appropriate food safety management system to remain competitive.
ISO 22000 is an international standard for food safety management systems established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
ISO 22000 is a broader food safety management system that incorporates the principles of HACCP, prerequisite program as a fundamental part of its requirement but also includes other management system requirements that follows ISO common high-level structure (HLS) framework. It is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.
HLS consists of common 10-clause developed by ISO to ensure greater harmonization among its many different management system standards such as quality management (ISO 9001) or environmental management (ISO 14001).
Common 10-clause are Scope, Normative Reference, Terms and Definitions, Context of Organization, Leadership, Planning, Support, Operation (covers HACCP principle and PRP in this chapter), Performance Evaluation, and Improvement.
ISO 22000 standard introduced the concept of “operational prerequisite programs (OPRPs)” to add to the existing concepts of prerequisite programs (PRPs) and Critical Control Points (CCP).
ISO 22000 is an internationally recognized standard, providing global credibility to organizations that achieve certification. It demonstrates compliance with internationally accepted best practices for food safety management and can enhance market access, especially for organizations operating in international markets or supplying to multinational customers.
An impartial food safety audit conducted by a reputable third-party such as TÜV SÜD will provide an objective evaluation of the effectiveness of the quality systems and procedures, to ensure the production of safe food and food products. TÜV SÜD is accredited for ISO 22000 audit and certification for companies, working closely with clients to ensure that the requirements and standards are met.
TÜV SÜD has extensive experience in food and feed management system certification, and was one of the first certification bodies acting in this field. With the internationally recognized accreditation, TÜV SÜD’s global network of auditors provides the assurance that a formalized and structured approach to attaining certification is applied without bias, ensuring that audit approaches are consistent, regardless of the product or country of production. By partnering with us, you benefit from our acclaimed track record in quality. With in-depth experience in food testing, inspection, auditing and certification, TÜV SÜD is globally recognized as a trusted brand throughout the food industry value chain.
TÜV SÜD offers ISO 22000 audit and certification services based on the following standards:
Note: All the above are HACCP-based food safety management system. For other FSMS schemes such as GFSI-recognized schemes, please contact us for more details.

The objective of the ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System Certification is to ensure food safety not only in the consumer markets but also in the manufacturing process. Obtaining the ISO 22000 certification by ensuring all the standard’s requirements are met has many benefits like:
● Increased profits for the company
● Better utilisation of resources
● Better risk management
● Statutory and regulatory compliance
● Better customer trust
● Integration with other ISO management systems
● Insurance for safer food products
● Decrease in food-borne illnesses
The ISO 22000:2018 update was published on June 19th, 2018. The FSMS audits thereafter have incorporated new requirements. The new specifications under the ISO 22000:2018 audit standard offer better integration with other ISO standards. The redefinition of PRP and oPRP has made it much easier to understand too. Among other changes, the prominent ones are:
● Codex HACCP development has been embedded in the standard
● Simpler implementation
● Two inter-related PDCA cycles have been added: The food safety management system and the product production/service delivery PDCA.
● Organisational considerations of risk will complement codex HACCP.
● Simplified, linear clause structure
Any company can manage its food safety levels with the following steps to get certified under ISO 22000:
● Reflect by self-assessing the current quality and recognise the need for a certification
● Compare your process and product with the requirements, and seek guidance from a training organisation with an ISO 22000 licence
● Set up an audit of the food safety management system and facilities by contacting a certification partner that helps you get ISO 22000 food safety certified
● Execute the necessary corrective measures recommended by the experts for non-conformities
● The certification body will register the certificate as soon as the audit is successful.
ISO 22000, an internationally renowned standard, combines the HACCP system for ensuring food safety at all levels with the ISO 9001 approach to food safety management. The standard outlines how a company can prove its capacity to manage security risks and guarantee food safety. Any organisation involved in the food supply chain may use FSMS 22000.
FSSC 22000 uses ISO 22000 as the principle for the management system and develops more specifications based on it, making the two comparable. The primary distinction between the two certifications is that, unlike the ISO standard, the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) recognises the FSSC 22000 scheme. GFSI recognition demonstrates that the programme satisfies global standards. ISO 22000 combines ISO 9001 and HACCP approaches guaranteeing quality, reliability and safety.
ISO 22000 ensures food safety by amalgamating the following widely recognised four key elements: interactive communication, management of systems, prerequisite programmes, and the guidelines of the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point).
The following are some of the requirements of ISO 22000:
● Having a comprehensive food safety policy for your organisation, created by top management
● Establishing goals that will guide your business' efforts to adhere to this policy
● Creating a management system, planning its design, and documenting it
● Keeping track of the system's performance in records
● Assembling a team of qualified people to serve as the food safety team
