With our interdisciplinary expertise, our team of experts will work with you along the entire product development lifecycle to add value and deliver a safe, reliable ESS battery product.

WHAT DOES TESTING OF STATIONARY ENERGY STORAGE MEAN?

Energy storage systems (ESS) are important building blocks in the energy transition. An ESS battery can be used to efficiently store electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar. ESS batteries come in a range of storage capacities, from a few kilowatt hours (i.e., storage for private homes) to multi-megawatt systems used by utility companies. ESS battery testing ensures these storage solutions are safe and comply with relevant market standards like IEC 62619, an international standard published in 2017, and is designed to meet the needs of the growing ESS market.

WHY IS TESTING ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM BATTERIES IMPORTANT?

Stationary batteries need to be safe and reliable, and must comply with various legal and technical requirements of the target countries if they are to be accepted on the market. Stationary lithium-ion storage systems, which are increasingly popular due to their energy density and cyclic strength, impose special demands on safety which must be met.

ESS battery testing provides multiple benefits to you as manufacturer and to your customers:

  • Give your customers confidence that your products meet the highest safety standards for ESS batteries.
  • Maintain a competitive advantage by shortening lead times, streamlining processes and gain faster market access with the support of an expert partner who assists you throughout the entire testing and certification process.
  • Minimise risk and avoid costly redesigns by identifying design issues early and ensure product conformity meets international regulatory standards.
  • Access multiple markets with your ESS batteries by ensuring compliance with international standards and regulations like the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), IEC 62619, IEC 62620, IEC 63056, VDE-AR-E 2510-50, UL 1973, JIS 8715-1 and JIS8715-2.

TÜV SÜD'S COMPREHENSIVE ESS BATTERY TESTING SERVICES

TÜV SÜD is a leading global expert in testing all kinds of large-scale batteries, as well as ESS batteries. Our testing services ensure that your product meets the highest level of quality and safety and comply with relevant international regulations and standards.

If you want to sell stationary energy storage systems in the EU market, manufacturers must comply with relevant battery and electronics legislation. This includes the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU) and the Battery Directive. After successful testing, you can apply a CE mark as declaration of conformity to your product. This shows it can legally be marketed in Europe.

For stationary lithium-ion batteries, TÜV SÜD tests your products according to IEC 62619. This standard addresses safety testing at cell level. It includes tests for short circuits, overcharging, thermal abuse, and drop and impact testing. IEC 62619 also includes functional safety tests at battery level, including voltage and current control to prevent overcharging as well as overheating control.

We also offer safety testing according to the above mentioned standards and

  • VDE-AR 2510-50,
  • IEC 63056,
  • EN 61427,
  • IEC 62485-5,
  • UL9540A and
  • the UL 1973 standard for stationary energy storage systems.

To obtain information about the performance of stationary lithium-ion batteries, we also carry out performance tests according to IEC 62620.
