What is packaging testing?

Packaging testing encompasses a range of tests designed to assess the suitability of packaging materials for use with a given product.

Product packaging must be sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of transportation and environmental conditions, while remaining durable, safe and convenient for end users.

Why is packaging material testing important?

Packaging testing provides assurances that your packaging will protect your product from damage or degradation during the transportation and distribution process. Packaging testing can also reduce your packaging costs by identifying appropriate protection levels and reducing the amount of packaging materials used.

TÜV SÜD’s packaging material testing services can help you reduce costs

TÜV SÜD offers a full range of services for packaging testing that replicates the mechanical and climatic conditions that products may encounter during transportation and storage.

As part of our testing programmes, we can determine a product’s susceptibility to damage so that an appropriate level of packaging protection is used. In addition to reducing the risk of damage to products in transit, we can provide advice on possible cost savings through the removal of excess or unnecessary packaging.

Our packaging certification process

We offer a wide range of packaging certifications and can take your products through a comprehensive range of tests. TÜV SÜD testing facilities have been accredited by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) to certify that your packaging complies with current ISTA packaging requirements.

  • ISTA packaging tests
    • Vibration testing - for both random and sinusoidal vibrations
    • Shock testing - to address unexpected impacts
    • Compression testing - to determine the strength of packaging and to ensure the safety of stacked loads
    • Side impact testing - for carton or palletized loading, unloading and shunting
    • Tilt testing - to evaluate product stability
    • Environmental stress testing - to evaluate the impact of temperature, humidity and thermal cycling
  • Other tests we conduct
    • Carton drop test
    • Biodegradability
    • Bottom end dome reversal
    • Buckle resistance
    • Burst resistance
    • Carbonation retention
    • Closure removal torque
    • Corrosion resistance
    • Drop impact resistance
    • Internal pressure
    • Permeability testing
    • Perpendicularity
    • Secure seal
    • Simulated palletizing
    • Vibration resistance
    • Vertical top load
  • Packaging Testing for Medical Devices & IVDs

In addition to the packaging testing services above, TÜV SÜD also offers packaging design validations for terminally sterilised medical devices & IVD packaging systems to help show conformity to ISO 11607.

    Sterile Barrier System Integrity:

    • We assess medical device packaging for seals, materials, and design to evaluate the packaging system’s ability to maintain its sterile integrity and protect devices during transportation & storage.

    Transportation Simulation:

    • We mimic real-world transportation and storage conditions.by testing packaging against environmental changes and mechanical stresses, including shocks, vibrations, and compression.

    Shelf-Life Testing:

    • We evaluate the impact of time, temperature, and humidity on medical device packaging materials through both accelerated again and real-time aging.
