COMPLY WITH LED TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Significant technological improvements in the quality and performance of light emitting diodes (LEDs) have made it the preferred technology for lamps and lighting products used in consumer, commercial and industrial applications. LED lighting is more energy efficient, and the rapidly growing use of LED lighting will help to reduce energy demand in the coming years. However, as LED technology continues to evolve to meet the performance requirements of more demanding applications, LED testing requirements are changing and expanding to address this.

LED performance is a primary concern for commercial and industrial customers, and certification to specific performance standards can be used as evidence of compliance with buyer requirements. In addition, demonstrated compliance with the requirements of voluntary energy efficiency schemes, such as the U.S. ENERGY STAR program, can be important factors for marketplace acceptance. Finally, certain tests such as those addressing electrical and photometric safety are generally required for access to major markets, including the U.S. and the European Union (EU).

LEDs are subject to a wide range of safety and performance testing, including:

  • Electrical safety
  • Electromagnetic compatibility
  • Energy Efficiency

In addition, performance testing related to the color and intensity of emitted light or exposure to extreme environmental conditions are important considerations for LED lighting products used in demanding applications such as transportation and infrastructure projects.

Concerns about the possible health effects from exposure to light generated from LEDs has also resulted in the introduction of photobiological testing of LEDs to ensure user safety.
