Certification mark for reduced driver distraction

Scope:

This certification mark applies to in-vehicle components which are tested for reduced driver distraction.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is based on the eye-glance test using a driving simulator according to the Visual-Manual National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Driver Distraction Guidelines for In-Vehicle Electronic Devices (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Docket No. NHTSA-2010-0053). Driver distraction means the diversion of a driver’s attention from activities critical for safe operation and control of a vehicle to a competing activity. Within the scope of testing the non-driving-related tasks initiating phone calls, text-based communication and launch music are covered as well as the driving-related task navigation of the vehicle: destination entry. In the test, driving simulation with gaze-tracking equipment is used to assess the device under repeatable test conditions and match with the NHTSA test criteria. The relevant tests are also conducted to comply with the EU Directives for Health and Safety, EMC and R&TTE.

  • Reduced Driver Distraction
    The product is tested in a driving simulator with 24 participants in varying ages according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines. In the test people are asked to perform different tasks and the driver distraction – the seconds in which the driver looks away from the street – during these tests are measured through an eye-tracking device. If the seconds in which the driver looks away from the street are in line with the NHTSA guidelines, the product will be awarded as “Reduced Driver Distraction”.

  • Safety Tested
    The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.      
  • Production Monitored
    Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

    As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements of high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

    In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorized changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
