WHAT IS THE FSSAI SCHEDULE IV AUDIT?

FSSAI has envisaged audits of Food Business Operators through Private Auditing Agencies to strengthen the food safety surveillance system. To cultivate and foster the growth of a compliance culture, FSSAI enables compliance through privately recognized auditing agencies. Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing) Regulations, 2018, were notified on 28th August 2018 for the same.

Food safety audits will reduce the regulatory food safety inspections conducted by the Central or State Licensing Authorities. Satisfactory audits will lead to less frequent regulatory inspections by the Central or the State Licensing Authority except for regulatory sampling. This will strengthen the food safety surveillance system and encourage self-compliance while at the same time assuring food safety to the consumers.

Food businesses holding a Central License and falling under the following 8 categories of food business are subjected to mandatory food safety auditing:

  • Dairy Products and Analogues 
  • Meat and meat products, including poultry
  • Eggs and egg products
  • Foodstuffs intended for nutritional uses (Food for infant nutrition etc.)
  • Prepared Foods (Catering etc.)
  • Indian Sweets
  • Nutrients and their preparations (Fortified Rice Kernels only)
  • Packaged drinking water
