ISO 9001 is an internationally recognised standard that defines the requirements for quality management systems (QMS) across all industries. With a certified QMS, companies ensure that products and services meet customer expectations and comply with applicable legal regulations.
An ISO 9001 certification offers numerous benefits for companies of all sizes. These range from quality and customer satisfaction to efficiency, responsiveness, trust, and reliability. You can learn how TÜV SÜD's certification process works here.

The current version of the standard is ISO 9001:2015. However, ISO is working intensively to revise ISO 9001, aligning the standard with newer legal requirements and ensuring that it reflects the evolving needs of organisations and the global economy more accurately.
Due to the extensive feedback from stakeholders on the first draft – the so-called Committee Draft – and the need for further discussion, a standard revision by the Working Group became necessary. ISO 9001 is therefore expected to come into force in 2026. The anticipated changes are intended to improve compatibility with other standards, and climate protection is also set to play a greater role.
Simply put, the ISO 9001 standard defines the minimum requirements for a quality management system. Once implemented, a QMS can be certified by an independent, accredited body such as TÜV SÜD.
This quality management standard focuses on meeting customer expectations for product or service quality. A key pillar of ISO 9001 is the process-oriented approach, which ensures that all essential processes are aligned. A QMS documents and reviews these processes regularly. Even well-performing organisations can identify new opportunities for optimisation, saving costs, reducing risks and improving customer satisfaction.
Introducing a QMS in accordance with ISO 9001 offers many advantages. For example, it enables companies to:
- increase transparency of their processes
- improve customer satisfaction sustainably
- significantly reduce errors, risks and associated costs
However, the true significance of ISO 9001 certification goes further. Many clients or business partners require proof of systematic quality management – clear processes, quality and customer focus – from their suppliers or service providers. ISO 9001 certificates are recognised worldwide and serve as such proof.
Customers and employees also respond positively to a certificate issued by a reputable organisation. It communicates immediately that the company works to international standards with a clear customer focus and continuously improves its processes.
ISO 9001 certification demonstrates that your company places a clear emphasis on quality and customer focus – and that continuous improvement is a daily priority for you.
ISO 9001 is based on seven quality management principles, the aim of which is to continuously improve the overall performance of organisations:
There is no legal obligation requiring companies to obtain ISO 9001 certification, but the market does demand it. Many industries expect business partners to hold such a certificate. It proves that customer requirements are consistently met, that processes are under control, and that continuous improvement is practised. This is confirmed by an independent third party.
An ISO 9001 certificate provides objective proof of systematic quality management. It is highly regarded in business and is often a prerequisite for establishing business relationships.
ISO 9001 defines universal requirements for quality management systems. It provides a user-friendly framework adaptable to the individual needs of your company.
While Chapters 1 to 3 offer introductory information, Chapters 4 to 10 specify the requirements for implementing a QMS and achieving ISO 9001 certification:
- Context of the organisation (Chapter 4)
- Leadership (Chapter 5)
- Planning (Chapter 6)
- Support (Chapter 7)
- Operation (Chapter 8)
- Performance evaluation (Chapter 9)
-- Improvement (Chapter 10)
Once all requirements are fulfilled, the ISO 9001 quality management system is implemented, all documents and evidence are available, internal audits and management reviews are completed, a certification by TÜV SÜD is possible.
Important: a QMS is not static, it must be implemented and used in practice every day.
First published in 1987, the 'mother of all standards' has since been revised several times. The current valid version is ISO 9001:2015. A new standard revision is underway and the final version of ISO 9001:2026 is expected to be published soon.
ISO places great importance on sustainability. Due to climate change, the consideration of climate-related risks has already been mandated in certain integrated management systems. Extreme weather can disrupt supply chains, cause production downtime or increase energy demand, such as for cooling of the workplace.
Such risks must now be addressed systematically; organisations must ensure resilience. To this end, ISO has incorporated amendments (AMD 1:2024-02) into the Harmonised Structure (HS), which are valid without a revision of the standard. They are, therefore, already assessed in ISO 9001 audits today.

This is strictly regulated. Only accredited certification and conformity assessment bodies may perform official ISO 9001 audits and certification. These bodies must undergo a consistent accreditation process.
Important: a certification body may not audit itself.
Audits follow a systematic, structured process. The TÜV SÜD audit team checks that the requirements have been correctly and effectively implemented.
Afterwards, the company receives the audit report and, if successful, the certificate. Any major non-conformities must be corrected before certification can be granted.
There is no standard timeline. ISO 9001 is suitable for organisations of any size or industry, and the scope can vary.
There are several critical points to consider, particularly when seeking initial certification of a QMS to ISO 9001, including:
ISO 9001 is about establishing a QMS that is genuinely implemented within the organisation. The staff must be familiar with the processes, as well as their responsibilities and the quality targets, and be able to implement them in their day-to-day work.
ISO 9001 certificates are valid for three years. Annual surveillance audits are required during this period. After three years, a recertification audit is necessary.
Costs depend on multiple factors, such as:
Before the certification process begins, it is essential that you implement a QMS that meets the ISO 9001 requirements. This will form the basis of the certification process.
The process begins with an initial analysis, forming a project team, and developing a schedule. Contact TÜV SÜD early on so we can plan your ISO 9001 audits together. TÜV SÜD provides expert and reliable support throughout the audit process, right up to the award of your certificate. We look forward to hearing from you.
