Certification mark for products with food contact

Scope:

The certification mark applies to food grade polymers in products used for storing, containing or consuming food products. The scope of testing thus includes products such as kitchen utensils, packaging or food processing machines. Synthetic or semi-synthetic polymers are key components in plastics manufacturing. Testing is aimed at ensuring that the certified product is suitable for use in conjunction with food products.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. The test procedure developed by TÜV SÜD is based on directives and provisions in the field of food contact materials.

All tests are carried out according to Commission Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with Food.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • Food Grade Polymer
The product certified by TÜV SÜD Product Service contains polymers suitable for storing foodstuffs.
  • Quality Tested
The TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “Quality Tested” confirms that the product and its instructions for use were tested for criteria such as user-friendliness and durability. In addition, the products were tested for harmful substances, and random tests were carried out on the products directly at the production plant.
  • Voluntary Testing
The voluntary TÜV SÜD certification mark (see basis of certification) shows that the product were certified by the third-party expert organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service.

The certification mark is only awarded to products that undergo inspection by TÜV SÜD Product Service and comply with the criteria quoted below.
  • Bisphenol-A – NI
Bisphenol A is one of the banned substances. The product is tested for the unintentional introduction of the substance into the product. The value measured must be below 0.1 mg/kg.
  • Phthalates
Phthalates are mainly used in the production of plastics and should not be ingested. Given this, the certified products were tested for phthalates and and for compliance with the existing threshold values.
  • Food Contact Material
Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 sets forth a range of substances that must be absent from, or present only to a very limited extent, in food contact materials. The certified products were tested for these substances and for compliance with the existing limit values.
  • Substances of Very High Concern
The REACH (registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) regulation is applied to Substances of Very High Concern, SVHC.

SVHCs are chemical compounds which have been identified under the REACH regulation as having particularly harmful properties and which may have serious impacts on human health and the environment.
