IEC 60335 Testing

IEC 60335 IS THE FUNCTIONAL SAFETY STANDARD FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES FOR HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR PURPOSES

The standard covers appliances with voltage ratings not more than 250V for single phase appliances, and 480V for other appliances. Appliances not intended for household use but are used by laymen in other environments such as shops, farms and light industry are also cover by IEC 60335.

The standard comprises of two main parts:

• IEC 60335-1 provides the general testing requirements, classifications, and marking and instructions for household appliances and similar devices.
• IEC 60335-2 detail specific requirements for specific types of appliances. There are over 100 different types of appliances listed. The list below is just a small sampling:
  • IEC 60335-2-5 Dishwashers
  • IEC 60335-2-6 Stationary cooking ranges, hobs, ovens, and similar appliances
  • IEC 60335-2-7 Washing machines
  • IEC 60335-2-11 Tumble dryers
  • IEC 60335-2-16 Food waste disposers
  • IEC 60335-2-56 Projectors and similar appliances
  • IEC 60335-2-58 Commercial electric dishwashing machines

The IEC 60335 standard, however, does not apply to appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes, or to be used in locations where special conditions prevail – in the presence of a corrosive atmosphere, for example. Appliances that are not covered include:

• Medical electrical equipment
• Hand-held electrical tools
• IT Equipment
• Audio, video, and similar electronic apparatus
