A shortcut to Jerusalem: The railway track between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv

It was to become a high-speed train connection between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, but this railway project in Israel was delayed. Our rail experts got it back on the right track.

A shortcut to Jerusalem: The railway track between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Israel Railways built a railway line to connect Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, some 70 kilometers away, as well as Ben Gurion Airport there, and to provide a shortcut around massive traffic jams in and around these congested areas. It was a project that initially did not get off to a good start: They’d been working for more than 17 years before the first train left for Jerusalem in autumn 2018.

Technical defects and safety concerns resulted in delays, so Israel Railways engaged our colleagues from TÜV SÜD Rail to inspect the railway track. In Israel, there was no notified body or authority that could evaluate this – that’s where TÜV SÜD came in, taking over the safety assessment. Our rail experts from Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Hungary were responsible for a part of the section. Customers choose TÜV SÜD because of our extensive expertise, flexibility, and experience on global projects.

The Bosporus Tunnel in Turkey, the “Bahndl” train line between Mals and Meran in South Tyrol, the Metro in Mexico City, and now this railway line in Israel: The list of rail projects TÜV SÜD has been involved is long. Thereby, those projects are mainly about checking the technical safety of railway lines.

Not just the political situation, but also winning the trust of the people on the ground was challenging for our TÜV SÜD team in Middle East.

The first part of the section from Jerusalem to the airport was released with conditions in September 2018. According to Israel Railways, the extension to Tel Aviv will be completed in a few months.
