What is it?
Dimethyl formamide (DMFo) is a man-made organic compound. It has diversified uses in consumer products. One of the applications is the production of polyurethane as synthetic leather. To avoid using this substance in the PU production, water-based formulations are readily available to meet market needs. It is also used as a cleaning solvent in textiles, leather and plastic and a solvent in the formulation of glues. In additional, DMFo can be used in manufacturing printed circuit boards in the electrical and electronic appliance.
It is worthy to note that DMFo does not have similar uses as dimethyl fumarate (DMFu) which can be used as preservatives in textiles and leather goods.
Potential hazard:
DMFo is classified as toxic to reproduction category 1B in the European Union. It may affect the human nervous system and long-term exposure may lead to damage to the liver and kidneys.
Commonly found in:
Electrical and electronic equipment, products made of PU e.g. shoes, clothing, furniture.
