This course has been developed to provide learners with a foundation of environmental and sustainability knowledge to build upon. The wide range of environmental, sustainability and governance principles covered ensures that learners appreciate and understand the breadth of the sustainability agenda, and the focus on specific management tools and skills provides learners with an introduction to practical application that they will need when working within this arena. 

What will you learn?

The Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management (FCIEM) has been developed in line with the IEMA Associate Membership Standard to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to initiate a career in environment/sustainability, specifically focusing on environmental management. 

At the end of this five-day course, you will be able to: 

  • Outline the implications of global trends for the environment, for society, for the economy and for organizations 
  • Outline sustainable business/governance principles and their relationship with organizations, products and services 
  • Outline environmental principles and their relationship with organizations, products and services 
  • Outline major policy and legislation and their implications for organizations, products and services 
  • Outline major tools, techniques, systems and practices used to improve sustainability performance 
  • Outline the role of innovation and other leading practices in developing sustainable products and services and providing sustainable solutions 
  • Collect data, perform analysis, and evaluate information 
  • Research and plan to provide sustainable solutions 
  • Deliver effective communication and capture feedback 
  • Engage with stakeholders 
  • Outline tools and techniques that identify opportunities and risks 
  • Identify and propose ways to improve performance 
  • Support change and transformation to improve sustainability

    Day 1: 

    • Why we need to be sustainable 
    • Environmental Principles 

    Day 2: 

    • Principles of Sustainable Organizations 
    • Pollution and Pollution Control 

    Day 3: 

    • Introduction to Policy and Legislation 
    • Key Environmental Legislation 
    • Start Environmental Tools and Assessment 

    Day 4: 

    •  Finish Environmental Tools and Assessment 
    • Data and Reporting 
    • Environmental Management Systems 

    Day 5:

    • Environmental Auditing 
    • Improving Sustainability Performance 

    Note: Activities, assignments, group discussions, and case studies will be spread across all days 
     

  • Who Should Attend?
    This course is aimed at learners who are initiating a career in environmental management and want a solid foundation of environment and sustainability expertise to build on. The achievement of IEMA Associate membership, IEMA’s entry professional membership level, helps provide evidence of this knowledge as well as commitment to this career pathway. 
  • Pre-requisites
    There are no formal entry requirements for learners to enroll onto this course.

  • Examination & Certification
    • Exam format: a total of 30 questions 
    • Type of questions: Multiple choice 
    • Exam duration: 1 hour (timed when assessment starts – cannot pause) 
    • Passing criteria: Participants must achieve an overall score of 21 marks (70%) to pass the exam successfully 
    • Exam mode: Open book online exam 

    Certification: 

    • Certificate of Successful Completion: Will be awarded only if an overall score of 49 marks (70%) is achieved in the written online exam. 
    • Certificate of Attendance: Will be awarded only if the attendance requirements are satisfied and if the participant is unsuccessful in the online final examination.
