About this course

This ISO 50001 Lead Auditor Training Course equips professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform first‑, second‑, and third‑party audits of Energy Management Systems (EnMS) in accordance with ISO 50001, ISO 19011, and ISO 17021. This course supports organisations pursuing ISO 50001 certification by developing competent auditors who can evaluate EnMS conformity and effectiveness.

Delivered using an Accelerated Learning approach, this management system auditing course combines expert instruction with discussions, practical exercises, and case studies. Participants consolidate their understanding and gain hands‑on auditing experience relevant to roles such as EnMS auditor, energy manager, or energy management function personnel.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

By the end of this ISO 50001 lead auditor training, you will be able to: 

  • Describe the purpose of an Energy Management System (EnMS), EnMS standards, management system audits, and third‑party certification 
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of an auditor, including planning, conducting, reporting, and following up audits in line with ISO 19011 and ISO 17021 
  • Plan, conduct, report, and follow up EnMS audits to evaluate conformity with ISO 50001:2018

COURSE OUTLINE

  • General introduction to Energy Management Systems
  • Energy management principles, terminology, and ISO 50001 requirements
  • Conducting Stage 1 audits (including document review)
  • Audit planning and preparation 
  • Process auditing techniques and auditor skills 
  • Non-conformity (NC) writing and audit reporting 
  • Conducting follow‑up audits

Note: Activities, assignments, group discussions, and case studies are integrated throughout all five days.

Pre‑requisites: 

  • A basic understanding of ISO 50001:2018, the PDCA cycle, and management system concepts
  • General knowledge of energy management, such as energy flows, performance indicators, and applicable regulations
  • Prior auditing experience or completion of an ISO 50001 Foundation course is beneficial but not mandatory.

The course is delivered by an ISO 50001‑certified, CQI‑IRCA‑approved trainer with extensive experience in Energy Management Systems, energy efficiency, and sustainable operational performance. The trainer provides practical insights into implementing, maintaining, and continually improving ISO 50001:2018 across diverse industries.

Examination & Certification 

Examination

  • Written examination conducted at the end of the course
  • Duration: 120 minutes 
  • Passing criteria: Minimum overall score of 70%
  • For in-house training: examination on the final day of the programme
  • For virtual training: examination is mandatory and conducted in person at the nearest TÜV SÜD branch, in line with IRCA requirements 

Certification

  • Certificate of Successful Completion: Awarded to participants achieving at least 70% (63 marks) in both continuous assessment and the written examination
  • Certificate of Attendance: Awarded to participants who meet attendance requirements but do not achieve the passing score
