about the course

The HAZOP Chairman Training Course is a comprehensive program designed to equip professionals with the knowledge, leadership skills, and practical tools required to effectively lead Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies. The course provides both theoretical foundations and hands-on experience, preparing participants to manage multi-disciplinary teams in identifying and mitigating process risks.

Whether you're stepping into the Chairman role for the first time or aiming to sharpen your facilitation techniques, this course offers valuable insights into best practices, real-world challenges, and key responsibilities for running successful and efficient HAZOP sessions

Duration: 5 Days

  • What will you learn?

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Grasp the principles and objectives of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
    • Navigate the HAZOP process step-by-step using guide words and deviations
    • Facilitate structured and focused discussions with multidisciplinary teams
    • Manage time, maintain engagement, and ensure clear outcomes
    • Tackle common issues faced by HAZOP Chairmen, such as team dynamics, unclear design data, or off-track discussions
    • Coordinate with the Scribe for accurate and comprehensive documentation
    • Understand how HAZOP outcomes influence design and operations
    • Participate in workshops and case studies to apply learning in simulated environments
  • Course outline

Topics to be covered in this course include:

Module 1: Introduction to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)

    • What is Process Hazard Analysis?
    • Common PHA techniques: HAZOP, What-if, FMEA, FTA
    • Purpose and importance of PHA in Safety Management Systems
    • Regulatory and standard frameworks (OSHA, IEC 61882, API)

Module 2: HAZOP Study – Concepts & Methodology

    • History and evolution of HAZOP
    • Objectives of a HAZOP study
    • Step-by-step methodology:
      • Selecting nodes
      • Using guide words (e.g., No Flow, More Pressure, Reverse Flow)
      • Identifying deviations, causes, consequences, safeguards
    • HAZOP worksheet structure and outputs

Module 3: HAZOP Workshop (Hands-on Practice)

    • Role distribution: Chairman, Scribe, Process Engineer, HSE, Operator, etc.
    • Conducting a mock HAZOP session using sample P&ID
    • Practice applying guide words and recording findings
    • Team interaction and time management during session

Module 4: Case Study – Real Project Scenario

    • Walkthrough of an actual HAZOP study from a real-life facility
    • Discussion on findings, recommendations, and impacts
    • How HAZOP influenced design or operational decisions
    • Lessons learned from real implementation

Module 5: Challenges Faced by the HAZOP Chairman

    • Low engagement or dominance by certain team members
    • Off-topic discussions and managing group dynamics
    • Time constraints and keeping the session productive
    • Dealing with lack of documentation or unclear P&IDs
    • Balancing technical depth vs practicality

Module 6: The Role of the Scribe – Documentation & Best Practices

    • Responsibilities of the HAZOP Scribe
    • How to accurately and efficiently document discussions
    • Using digital tools (e.g., PHA Pro, Excel templates)
    • Ensuring traceability and clarity in reporting
    • Collaboration between Chairman and Scribe
  • Who should attend?

    This course is designed for:

    • Process Safety Engineers
    • HSE Professionals
    • Process Engineers and Operations Staff
    • Engineering Managers
    • Risk Analysts
    • Anyone nominated or aspiring to become a HAZOP Chairman
  • What is the course methodology?

All participants will be given the opportunity to fulfil the roles of Leader and Scribe during workshops and to practice guiding a team through the HAZOP process. A proprietary HAZOP software package will be demonstrated, and participants will have the opportunity to ‘set up’ a study using this software. This course heavily utilizes an in-depth practical exercise in which participants will recreate a HAZOP study from the preparation stage to making organizational recommendations.
