  Certification mark for Toys

Scope:

The certification mark applies to mechanical toys. The term “toys” applies to all products designed or intended, whether exclusively or not, for use in play by children under 14 years of age.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is based on the EN 71 series of standards, which includes requirements for toys, their packaging and labeling. It also defines how to test the products' mechanical and physical properties. The certification mark is also based on the requirements of the German Food and Feed Code (Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch) regarding resistance of consumer products to saliva and perspiration. This test is based on the DIN 53160-1 and-2 standards.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • Saliva- and perspiration-resistant
In regular use, toys come into contact with skin and children put them into their mouths. Testing therefore verifies that toys are saliva- and perspiration-resistant. The test ensures that the toys are colour-fast, i.e. that the colour will not come off in the mouth or on mucous membranes or skin.
  • EN 71
Reference to the EN 71 series of standards (see basis of certification). The standards most frequently applied to toys include mechanical testing, flammability testing and chemical testing.
  • Safety tested

The voluntary TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is awarded for products indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.

  • Production monitored

Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
