The Fitness-For-Service (FFS) Assessment is a quantitative engineering evaluation performed to demonstrate the structural integrity of a component in service containing a flaw or damage. It is used to determine if affected pressurised equipment can continue to operate safely, even with the damage, for a period of time, thus aiding in making the appropriate 'run-repair-replace' decisions.
The webinar focuses on the types of flaws and damages to which the assessment can be applied, the data necessary to evaluate them, and how it aids in optimising maintenance by extending the time until repair or replacement. Since her PhD thesis in 2005-2008 at the Bundeswehr University, where she studied the fatigue crack growth behaviour of metallic materials, Johanna Steinbock has been working on the impacts of damages on the structure’s integrity and the determination of residual lifetime.
Starting as an expert in fracture mechanics at TÜV SÜD Industrie GmbH in Munich in 2010, due to our clients' upcoming requirements, she started drawing her attention to executing integrity assessments for all kinds of damages in correlation with the operation of pressurised components. She became an expert in Fitness-For-Service (FFS) Assessment according to the API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 and is responsible for the education of our FFS-Inspector. She still determines the requirements/content of the FFS-Assessment, which are specific for each damage that needs to be accessed. She focuses on the fast evaluation and results with her colleagues and can deliver Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Assessments.
