TÜV SÜD will present its extensive range of services in the fields of refrigeration and air-conditioning technology and technical acoustics at Chillventa, to be held from 8 to 10 October 2024 in Nuremberg. The cutting-edge test equipment and climatic chambers enable an array of tests to be conducted under realistic conditions for the purpose of verifying compliance with standard specifications. ts-pr-is-CO2-test-rigTÜV SÜD Industrie Service operates the largest independent testing laboratory for refrigeration and air-conditioning technology in Europe. Located in Olching near Munich, the laboratory’s 8,500 square metres are home to testing facilities where the experts examine the safety, reliability and environmental compatibility of refrigeration equipment and components. Technical and performance tests are conducted in 10 climatic chambers of various sizes, spanning a temperature range of -40°C to +50°C. Testing covers air-conditioning systems and ventilation systems, but also retail refrigeration equipment, heat pumps and individual components including heat exchangers, condensing units, fans and valves.

A special feature of the Olching test laboratory is the state-of-the art CO2 test rig for refrigeration equipment components that use CO2 as environmentally friendly refrigerant. “At our laboratory, we can test full-scale systems and their components under standardized conditions as well as real-life conditions,” explains Carsten Hoch, Head of Refrigeration at TÜV SÜD. Testing includes energy consumption, performance characteristics and functionalities. Performance testing can cover evaporator units of up to 40 kW, gas coolers of up to 120 kW, condensers of up to 80 kW and condensing units, as well as refrigerated cabinets for retail application. “The tests we conduct provide equipment manufacturers with clear and robust performance data for their products”, says Hoch, and emphasises that this serves to establish users’ trust in the refrigeration, ventilation and air-conditioning products.

The climatic chambers in the test laboratory have additional detection systems that monitor levels of oxygen and CO2 as well as hydrocarbons such as propane, a refrigerant that is generating plentiful interest today. In the event of an incident, the chamber is immediately shut down and an explosion-proof emergency ventilation system is activated. Hoch affirms, “With these safety measures in place, we are in an optimum position to conduct testing on refrigeration equipment and components using A3 refrigerants.”

Technical acoustics

Acoustic emissions are produced by refrigeration and air-conditioning systems and equipment, but also by household appliances like coffee machines, pressure washers and food processors as well as other consumer goods. TÜV SÜD’s state-of-the-art sound testing laboratory supports manufacturers in the context of compliance of their products with of the numerous statutory obligations and thresholds. TÜV SÜD’s technical acoustics services include measurement of sound power leve, measurement of emission sound pressure level in workplaces and acoustic measurements in accordance with customer requirements in the laboratory and on site. In addition, acoulstic measurements under the Outdoor Directive 2000/14/EC and applicable conformity assessment procedures are conducted in collaboration with the Certification Body of TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH.
