The Munich Business Climate Pact is an initiative of the City of Munich and major Munich-based companies working towards climate neutrality. TÜV SÜD has committed to participating in phase 3 of the Pact, which will be implemented by 2025. Over the initiative’s three-year term, the 16 participating companies aim to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 48,000 tonnes. In the next months, these companies will exchange ideas on specific focus topics and develop targeted measures to collectively advance climate protection.
"Alongside other companies and partners, TÜV SÜD will work towards developing binding and effective measures to reduce emissions," explains Dr Johannes Bussmann, CEO of TÜV SÜD AG, adding: "As the location of our corporate headquarters and numerous other testing and laboratory sites in the surrounding area, Munich provides significant leverage for emission reduction. We aim to make a difference both locally and at various international locations, demonstrating that economically successful and sustainable actions are not mutually exclusive."
The globally operating testing, inspection and certification (TIC) group, with over 26,000 employees, has already set itself the goal of significantly reducing its global GHG emissions. For this purpose, the company has become the first TÜV organisation to commit to a net-zero target under the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). These reduction targets meet the scientific requirements for mitigating global warming in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The TIC company has already adopted many specific actions and started on their implementation. For instance, it has defined emission reduction pathways and associated retrofitting measures for all its buildings. The company plans to install photovoltaic systems with a combined annual capacity of around 2,800 MWh in Germany alone and is continuously optimising its vehicle fleet.
TÜV SÜD’s Corporate Carbon FootprintFollowing the financial control principle, TÜV SÜD’s 2022 GHG inventory comprises data from the TIC company’s fully consolidated subsidiaries in Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, the US, China, Japan and South Korea, accounting for more than 90% of TÜV SÜD’s revenue volume and workforce. In 2022, the subsidiaries included in this report emitted around 72,225 t CO2e, corresponding to 3.1 t CO2e per employee and 27.3 t CO2e per € million of revenue generated. Climate Pact 3: Cooperation and Effectiveness
A key objective of Climate Pact 3 is the binding commitment by companies to effectively reducing their emissions. By undertaking this pledge, the companies aim to actively contribute to the City of Munich’s goal of achieving climate-neutrality by 2035. The thematic focus topics include energy efficiency, climate-friendly power supply, heating and cooling, sustainable mobility, circular economy, biodiversity and greening of spaces, sustainable lifestyles and digitalisation. To foster their effective work within the Climate Pact, the organisations have access to crucial partnerships. In addition to the Department of Labour and Economic Development of the City of Munich, the companies participating in the Climate Pact are supported by experts from Munich-based consultancy firm sustainable AG. Munich Airport GmbH, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria and Stadtwerke München GmbH also contribute their expertise.
