What is HAZOP analysis?

A Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis looks at all the potential risks in a manufacturing process, identifies problems and finds solutions.

In process manufacturing operations - such as pharmaceutical, chemical, food and similar industries - materials go through multiple stages in the production process where issues can arise. Putting these kinds of materials through industrial processes can lead to unintended consequences if chemicals react in unexpected ways, thermal runaway occurs, or if contaminants enter the process.

The purpose of HAZOP is to investigate and discover any potential weak points where the process could ‘go wrong’ in some manner. Process hazards can arise because of a wide range of factors, but could lead to:
