Simon, could you please start with a brief introduction of yourself and your role at TÜV SÜD?
Simon Lemin: My name is Simon Lemin, and I am the CEO for TÜV SÜD in South Asia. I've been with the company for around 15 years. I started in the UK as a nuclear safety consultant and later joined the TÜV SÜD International Leadership and Development Program, which led me to work in various regions, including China and India.
You've had quite an interesting journey. Can you tell us more about the decision to move from the UK to Asia and how it affected your family?
Simon: Initially, I never considered working abroad. I met my wife, who has a multicultural background, and she instilled in me a love for travel. Moving to Asia was a joint decision driven by a desire for new experiences. Our family has become what you might call "global citizens"—my two sons were born in different countries, and they’re fluent in multiple languages. It’s been an exciting journey for all of us.
What were some of the challenges you faced moving to different countries like China and India?
Simon: Moving to a new country where you don’t know the language, or the culture can be daunting. But both China and India have been incredibly welcoming. In China, the expat community became a second family, which made the adaptation process easier. In India, people are even more welcoming; I’ve never been invited to so many celebrations and dinners.
How have your experiences living and working abroad contributed to your professional growth?
Simon: Living and working abroad has been instrumental in shaping my career. Building relationships through shared experiences, like immersing myself in local cultures and cuisines, has enhanced my ability to connect with diverse teams. Being in Asia has provided opportunities to expand my network and gain a global perspective, which has enriched my professional development in ways that would not have been possible if I had stayed in the UK. These experiences have given me a deeper understanding of international business dynamics, which I value deeply.
What has been the most surprising or unexpected aspect of living abroad?
Simon: I was surprised by the efficiency and convenience of daily life in both China and India. For example, you can have things delivered incredibly quickly, and the level of technology and services is impressive. I was also surprised by how quickly we adapted and felt at home in these new environments.
You've mentioned personal growth as a significant part of your experience. Can you elaborate on that?
Simon: Living abroad has broadened my perspective on world events and made me more informed. Initially, I had to learn about the political and economic landscape for my role, but over time, it became a personal interest. I’ve also realized that my family and I can adapt to any situation. We've built resilience through these experiences, which makes me proud.
It sounds like you've embraced being a global citizen. Do you ever see yourself moving back to the UK?
Simon: For now, the UK feels more like a place to visit rather than home. Home is where my family is, and currently, that’s in Bangalore. We’re open to whatever comes next, but we’re not planning on moving back anytime soon.
