The certification mark applies to impact-absorbing surfacing systems to provide impact protection at playgrounds. These surfacing systems can be made from various materials, but must always have certain verifiable properties suitable to reduce the risk of injuries in case of a fall. Possible examples include impact-absorbing rubber mats.
The certification mark offered by TÜV SÜD is based on the EN 1177 standard. The standard specifies a test method by which the impact attenuation of playground surfacing can be determined. The test gives a critical fall height for surfacing that represents the upper limit of its effectiveness in reducing head injury.
The certified products must fulfil the requirements of the EN 1177 standard for “Impact absorbing playground surfacing – determination of critical fall height”. Testing proves that the impact-absorbing materials provide adequate impact attenuation for a pre-defined fall height. In this context a limit of 1000 is used for the HIC (head injury criterion).
The “Safety tested” TÜV SÜD mark is a voluntary product certification mark, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
