What is REACH?

REACH is an European Union regulation covering most consumer products, requiring companies to report on chemicals used throughout the supply chain and in their products. REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals.

REACH is broad in scope and affects the whole supply chain including companies based outside the EU. Compliance with REACH requires strategic planning as it asks industry to account for compliance throughout the supply chain. Comprehensive testing is a way to demonstrate compliance.

Why is REACH compliance important?

Compliance to REACH allows companies to:

  • Prove they are safeguarding human health and the environment
  • Access the EU market
  • Avoid regulatory fines and litigation
  • Save money and time testing in-house

TÜV SÜD leads you through the complexity of REACH compliance

REACH applies to different kinds of consumer product companies. This means compliance must be tailored to your needs.
Our experts help clients develop a strategic approach to REACH compliance, which includes:

  • Registration: Manufacturers and importers must register any chemical that reaches the one tonne/year threshold
  • Restriction: Each restricted substance has different conditions and scopes of restriction
  • Authorisation: Authorisation aims to eliminate or effectively control risks from chemicals that are particularly harmful to the human health or the environment.
  • Support: Our experts are located in all your key markets

  • Who is required to register substances for REACH compliance?

Any chemical substance (separately or as part of a mixture) imported to the EU requires REACH compliance if the quantity is more than 1 ton per year. Some of the entities that need to have a REACH certificate are –

    1. EU manufacturers or importers of chemicals. These could be individual chemicals or mixtures.
    2. Representative appointed by the manufacturer, formulator, or producer, if based outside of the EU.
    3. EU producers and importers of articles meeting the Guidance on Requirements for Substances in Articles.
  • Is REACH required for CE marking?

Conformité Européenne (CE) marking on products demonstrate that they are tested and deemed safe for human health and environment in the EU. Since REACH testing attempts to regulate chemicals that are known to cause cancer and reproductive harm in humans and damage to the environment, it is required for CE marking.

  • Does the REACH SVHC threshold apply to packaging?

Yes, it applies to each article used in the overall packaging of the product being imported in the EU. For example, if an electronic device is packed in a box filled with bubble wrap, both these items must be assessed for compliance with Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

  • Is REACH compliance mandatory?

REACH certification and compliance is mandatory if you are exporting any chemicals to the EU in excess of 1 ton per year. Failure to meet the requirement could result in your company getting banned from the EU.
