Organisations bear responsibility for the world of tomorrow through sustainable business practices and the careful use of resources. An effective environmental management system:

ISO 14001 can be effectively integrated with other standards, including ISO 9001, the internationally recognised quality management system standard. The certification offers a wide range of synergy effects. TÜV SÜD supports you in making the most of these opportunities.
The following standards have interfaces with ISO 14001:

This section answers the most important introductory questions about ISO 14001 certification.
ISO 14001 standard has been a globally recognised basis for environmental management systems since 1996. It covers all relevant aspects required for the continuous improvement of environmental performance.
The standard defines requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an environmental management system. These requirements are applicable to organisations of all types and sizes and across different geographical, cultural and social conditions.
The overarching aim of ISO 14001 certification is to:
This is achieved in line with economic, social and regulatory requirements. ISO 14001 is the only certifiable standard within the ISO 14000 family of environmental management standards.
Whether a craft business, small or medium-sized enterprise, large corporation, service provider or social organisation, any organisation can benefit from a certified environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001.
Certification by an independent, accredited ISO 14001 certification body makes a valuable contribution to sustainability and provides credible evidence of an organisation’s commitment to environmental protection for customers, business partners and the public.
For this reason, ISO 14001 certification is also an extremely valuable marketing tool. In many sectors, certification is even a prerequisite for participation in tenders or business partnerships.
ISO 14001 compliance includes the following core areas:
For a successful certification, the following ISO 14001 requirements must be met:
ISO 14001:2015 is replaced by a revised version from 15 April 2026. On our dedicated ISO 14001 revision page, you can find detailed information on the relevant changes to the updated standard.
In this section, we address the key questions regarding the certification process and the current revision of ISO 14001.
The duration depends on several factors:
In general, the certification process may take weeks. Larger or more complex organisations should allow additional time.
ISO 14001 certification is valid for three years. It starts with Stage 1 & Certification audit, followed by annual surveillance audits which are required to ensure continued compliance and effective corrective actions. After three years, a recertification audit is necessary to renew the certificate and confirm ongoing conformity with the standard.
The new version of ISO 14001 i.e. ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15th April 2026. It introduces a harmonized structure, embeds climate change considerations, strengthens lifecycle thinking for environmental aspects, adds formal change management (Clause 6.3), and expands guidance through an enhanced Annex A. The transition process started from the publication date.
ISO 14001 certification with TÜV SÜD follows a clearly structured process, from initial enquiry and auditing through to regular surveillance. Each step is designed to guide your organisation efficiently and transparently through the certification process.
