India implements +F logo for fortified foods

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued final regulations regarding the labelling of fortified food products.

Published in the India Gazette in August, the regulation, entitled Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, requires all food business operators (FBOs) that manufacturer or process fortified food products to include the +F logo on their product labelling. The regulation applies to all fortified food products, including those already registered and licensed by the FSSAI. Further, labelling of fortified food products consistent with the requirements of the regulation must be completed by not later than December 31, 2018.

Fortified foods include rice, wheat, oil and milk food products which have been “fortified” through the addition of micronutrients, and are essential in helping to reduce illnesses and improve the overall health of undernourished populations. The regulation is intended to help consumers more easily identify foods higher in essential nutrients

The text of the FSSAI regulation as published in the India Gazette is available through the FSSAI website.
