EU Commission amends MRLs for certain chemicals used on food products

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has amended its regulations for chemicals used in food products to more closely align its maximum residue levels (MRLs) with those specified in international standards.

Published in the Official Journal of the European Union in early April, Commission Regulation (EC) 2019/552 amends Annexes II and III of Regulation (EC) NO 396/2005, which details MRLs for pesticides used in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin. The latest changes involved the specified use of the following 16 chemicals:

  • Azoxystrobin
  • Bicyclopyrone
  • Chlormequat
  • Cyprodinil
  • Difenoconazole
  • Fenpropimorph
  • Fenpyroximate
  • Fluopyram
  • Fosetyl
  • Isoprothiolane
  • Isopyrazam
  • Oxamyl
  • Prothioconazole
  • Spinetoram
  • Trifloxystrobin
  • Triflumezopyrim

The Regulation was implemented in part to harmonise EU MRL requirements for these chemicals with the maximum residue limits (CXLs) detailed in a 2018 update to the Codex Alimentarius.

Other changes in the Regulation apply to the use of potassium phosphates containing fosetyl on several types of fruits, including blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, currents, gooseberries and elderberries.

The complete text of the EU Commission’s Regulation as published in the Official Journal is available here.
