In March, ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has published ISO 8442-9:20181 for ceramic knives.
Ceramic knives as defined in the standard are knives for the preparation and serving of food, consisting of a ceramic blade with cutting edge and handle, ceramic blade is a blade made from all types of ceramic raw materials.
The standard was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 186, Cutlery and table decorative metal holloware and is the latest part of the ISO 8442 series.
The new standard consists of major requirements such as hardness of ceramic blades, sharpness and edge retention, impact resistance, bonding strength of the coating and printing of ceramic blades, dishwasher safety, thermal shock and so forth.
The standard is also foreseen to be adopted by European Union as EN ISO 8442-92 in future.
