Globally recognised sustainability goals are crucial for the protection of our planet and the climate. Accredited companies supplying testing, inspection and certification (TIC) services provide the transparency that is essential for implementation of these goals. TÜV SÜD marks World Accreditation Day on 9 June 2021 by highlighting the role of these companies. With over 25,000 employees in around 50 countries, it is among the world’s leading TIC service providers.
“Accreditation: Supporting the implementation of the SDGs” is the title of the 2021 World Accreditation Day, called by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Cooperation (ILAC). Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were passed by the United Nations in 2015 with the aim of driving sustainable development at social, ecological and economic level. But a high degree of transparency is vital if the SDGs are to result in genuine sustainability. This is provided by accredited TIC companies, supplying impartial testing, inspection and certification all over the world. Accreditation by an official authority or international standard-setter is the prerequisite that enables them to operate in a specific field and/or country.

“By delivering innovative approaches and services, we make a major contribution towards further reducing carbon emissions in a variety of fields and industries”, explains Stepken. “For example, our new VERIsteel process sets out an informative basis for comparing carbon emissions in steel production and building the necessary transparency for decarbonisation in the steel industry.”
Particularly in areas where technical advancement is extremely fast-paced or new requirements are added, TÜV SÜD steps up to develop in-house solutions and services that complement existing standards or bridge delays until requirements are fully harmonised. One example of this is its sustainability assessment for the production of battery cells, based on the United Nations’ SDGs. The assessment spans the full length of the supply chain from delivery and production of raw materials to the manufacture, recycling and ultimate disposal of the battery cells.
In addition, TÜV SÜD’s management system certifications support companies and organisations seeking to achieve compliance with the requirements of laws and standards, optimise processes and continually improve their performance. An energy management system with ISO 50001 certification can not only cut energy consumption, but also pays into several SDGs: number 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), number 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), number 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and number 13 (Climate Action).
