Assessing the current state: getting additive manufacturing ready for serial production

TÜV SÜD's experts will participate in forums and an interactive workshop at the 3rd Munich Technology Conference (MTC3), taking place from 8 to 10 October. They will discuss various issues, including ways of preparing additive manufacturing for serial production. Conference participants include the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the companies of Oerlikon, GE Additive, McKinsey, Linde, Siemens and TÜV SÜD.

Additive manufacturing is in the process of transformation, moving from its use in prototype and single-part production to industrial-scale serial production. “As standards and empirical values are lacking, all stakeholders need to collaborate more closely”, says Holger Lindner, Chief Executive Officer of TÜV SÜD's Product Service Division. Stakeholders in this case include manufacturers and their suppliers, but also the world of science, standardisation committees, official authorities and users. “One prerequisite for stakeholders to be willing to concentrate their efforts is that they need to trust in the methods and products used”, continues Lindner. As a third-party service provider, TÜV SÜD verifies and validates these methods within the scope of audits and certification processes.

Standardisation and certification drive the industry's transformation to prepare for serial production. Gregor Reischle, Head of Additive Manufacturing at TÜV SÜD Product Service says, “To achieve reproducible quality, we need to validate all machines and resources employed in production against uniform criteria. This includes processes, methods and workflows, but also extends to employee training and qualification.”

TÜV SÜD plays a leading role in developing standards for additive manufacturing, which are essential for unlocking the full potential of production methods and accelerating their time to market. By doing so, TÜV SÜD’s experts support manufacturers and suppliers along the entire value chain, worldwide.
