France updated the TRIMAN Unified Recycling Signage System Handbook

April, 2016

In December 2015, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME)[1] updated the TRIMAN Unified Recycling Signage System – User’s Handbook and is now available.

Summary/highlights

The French authority ADEME has published an updated guideline on how to implement the TRIMAN Logo. The Handbook is available from the ADEME website for free, and users can be kept informed of future updates of this guide by completing a quick form[2].

Background

The introduction of the TRIMAN Logo was first published in the French Official Gazette as the French Decree No 2014-15773 on 23 December 2014. It came into force on 1 January 2015.

The Decree requires all recyclable products which are subject to the Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) in France to display a unified signage marking, such as the common symbol required by the Decree (TRIMAN logo), to inform consumers about the need to deliver their products to a separate collection for recycling at the end of its life cycle.

This requirement applies to any and all recyclable products distributed in France.

If it is not feasible to place the symbol on the product, the marking must be displayed on the packaging, use instructions or any other medium (including electronic) that accompanies the product. More examples can be found inside the user’s handbook regarding how and where the TRIMAN logo is to be applied under various situations.

The following is a list of products subject to this requirement:

  • Furniture and furnishings
  • Graphic papers
  • Tyres
  • Clothing textiles, household linens, shoes
  • Household packaging
  • Electrical and electronic equipment
  • Batteries and accumulators
  • Products that generate specific non-point waste

For products which are marked with other mandatory symbols, for example the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol for WEEE and batteries, do not require the TRIMAN mark.
