Safety is a central theme in the aerospace industry. Accordingly, the EN 9100 standard sets out a comprehensive quality management system for the sector. This standard has recently been revised and aligned to the latest generation of ISO standards. The EN 9100:2016 standard builds on the DIN ISO 9001 quality management standard and requires a fully traceable recording process across the entire supply chain of a product. Companies also need to define their interfaces with customers and aviation authorities and establish, perform and document verification and validation activities. TÜV SÜD and Hamburg-based company Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co. represent an example of an exceptionally good certification process.
Mankiewicz is a company with 1,400 staff at 16 locations worldwide, specialising in high-tech coating systems. For many years, the company has integrated various quality management systems to ensure product and process quality across all of its locations. With great commitment and success, Mankiewicz has now transitioned its quality management system for the aerospace industry to the EN 9100:2016 standard, undergoing certification by TÜV SÜD in the process. This re-certification forms the basis of the company's business with customers from the aerospace industry, which only award contracts to certified companies. In awareness of this, Mankiewicz set great store by good preparation for certification.
TÜV SÜD informs about the new EN 9100:2016 Standard
At Mankiewicz, preparations in the runup to certification took around one and a half years. To get an idea of the necessary changes, the head of quality management at Mankiewicz, Jens Peter Otte, first attended an informative event on EN 9100 held by TÜV SÜD as part of its “Customer Forum” series of events. At these events, specialists inform about the standard, report on best practices and give tips for application in practice. “These Customer Forums offer excellent, compact summaries of the specific standards and are a platform for exchanging experience and ideas with the certification body and expert colleagues from other companies who face the same challenges”, says Otte. After in-depth analysis and implementation of the new requirements in the company, Mankiewicz opted for certification by TÜV SÜD. Key factors for the coating manufacturer's decision to trust in TÜV SÜD were TÜV SÜD's global presence, extensive industry expertise and huge Reputation.
Certification by TÜV SÜD in six countries
All of the certification audits, which took place at various locations from the UK to France, the USA, China, Singapore and Germany, ran smoothly; all the sites were certified by TÜV SÜD. “The various international teams of auditors in the individual countries and their approaches contributed significantly to the pleasant atmosphere during the audit process”, recalls Otte. As well as the quality of Mankiewicz’s products, the certificate now provides another key advantage distinguishing the company from its competitors.
