EU Commission Modifies Rules on Food Contact Materials
The Commission of the European Union (EU) has issued a Regulation that amends and corrects its list of plastic materials and articles intended to come in contact with food (also referred to as food contact materials, or FCM).
Published in mid-January in the Official Journal of the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2019/37 is intended to update information provided in Annexes I and III of Regulation (EC) 10/2011 regarding plastic materials approved for use with food products. The updated information reflects the most recent scientific research and opinions regarding the safety of materials listed in the Annexes, and includes the addition of three new entries, FCM substances No 1059, No 1067 and No 1069.
The new Regulation also corrects a number of typographical errors in the earlier Regulation.
